Curiously Veg Radio sprouted up through an effort to reach plant-based and plant-curious minds alike. Our topics range from discussing scientific studies, tasty plant-based recipes, hot news topics, geeky humor, and informative interviews. The podcast encompasses serious information, personal experience, and creative dialog. Hope and Dave have known each other for over a decade and bring to the mixing board their unique journeys into a plant-based lifestyle. Hope’s extensive research and credentials from eCornell, Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and ACE give her a vast library of knowledge and expertise in the fields of health, nutrition, and fitness. Dave adds a flare of personal experience, research, and a devil-may-care attitude. This unique combination will, no doubt, leave you wanting more!

Your hosts at Curiously Veg Radio got a chance to talk with Dr. Garth Davis about his ground-breaking new book, Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession With Meat Is Killing Us And What We Can Do About It. We spoke about the role nutrition plays in a healthy lifestyle, evaluating research, and his own experience with changing his perspective on health and weight loss.

Why in the heck do we focus so much on protein? Won’t I get a protein deficiency if I don’t eat meat? What about gains tho?  Shouldn’t we buy foods that contains lots of protein? It’s carbs that make us fat, right? Butter is healthy because Time Magazine said so, and aren’t they experts?

We have all asked these questions when deciding how to eat to be healthy and build muscle. It’s confusing and there seems to be a new study or article out everyday that tells us what is the best way to eat, so how in the world can someone tell what is correct and what is profit-driven sensationalism? You can start with Dr. Davis, because he will open your eyes to what’s really going on and gives key advice on what is a healthy lifestyle.

In his book, Dr. Davis takes you on his personal journey of the physician becoming the patient - physician heal thyself if you will. He compiles all he learned, research, and findings in a guide that illustrates why we are sick and becoming fatter every year.  It is an easy to understand synopsis of what is really going on with our health and how we can take control back. Dr. Garth Davis is a fully recovered proteinaholic, Ironman, currently the medical director of the Davis Clinic at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, and starred on the hit TLC show Big Medicine.

Hope wanted to clarify ketosis because she felt that she didn’t explain it well enough. Ketones are substances that are made when the body breaks down fat for energy when there isn’t adequate carbohydrates available to equip the body with glucose for energy or if your body can't use glucose (or blood sugar) properly. The body becomes acidic (acidosis) which promotes inflammation. Yes, you will lose weight initially, but it is not sustainable and can cause serious health issues.

Integrative practitioners are physicians that have receive additional education in nutrition, fitness, and natural medicine. You can search the Academy of Health and Medicine to find a provider in your area.
